This phase aims to establish an architectural position and design strategy for a community-focused Learning Centre within the Merdeka 118 Precinct, reflecting on insights from earlier project phases. Students will interpret the concept of a Learning Centre in an urban heritage context, addressing public realm quality, movement, legibility, adaptability, and diversity. Through 1:100 model explorations of form-typologies such as linear, perimeter, and diffused forms using strategies like layering, subtraction, and overlapping, students will investigate massing, spatial planning, and façade design in response to the urban block and its physical and functional contexts. Precedent studies—one international and one from tropical cities—will explore reimagining learning in urban settings, tropical architecture elements (e.g., courtyards, passive cooling, sun shading), and regulatory considerations. Key themes include programmatic response, formal and street response, and public-private realm dynamics, emphasizing the role of the Learning Centre in revitalizing heritage areas through form, function, circulation, and cultural engagement.
