The Preliminary Studies project investigates the character and identity of a town or urban region through a Townscape Appraisal exercise, aiming to identify opportunities for responsive architectural design and place-making within the urban context. This preparatory task introduces students to urban design fundamentals by evaluating the visual and aesthetic qualities of the site, focusing on nine indicators: historical and urban morphology, urban structure, responsive environment, physical evaluation, place, content, landscape character, behavioral survey, and a micro-level SWOT analysis. The study encompasses both macro and micro-scale site analysis, equipping students with a comprehensive understanding of their assigned site. The objectives include exploring city formation and urban design concepts, implementing primary urban study methodologies, investigating the role of diverse user typologies in traditional and contemporary societies, and examining architectural responses to urban blocks. The outcome is a Townscape Appraisal documentation and presentation.
