Assignment 1

This assignment has been designed to facilitate our comprehension of fundamental building materials, delving into their inherent properties. Moreover, it prompts us to explore the underlying design rationales that govern the initial selection of these materials and their subsequent application across diverse building elements and components. As an illustrative example, materials such as timber, steel, plaster, slate, and others are considered.

Within this context, our task involves the selection of a renowned architect's creation, with the architect being chosen from a predefined list furnished by our instructor. In my case, I have opted to study the illustrious Fallingwater, an iconic embodiment of organic architecture conceived by the visionary Frank Lloyd Wright. By dissecting Fallingwater's construction, materials, and design philosophy, we aim to glean insights into the intricate relationship between architectural creativity, material selection, and structural execution.

This individual assignment entails the creation of a presentation board on an A1-sized canvas. The board's content encompasses a preliminary introduction to both the esteemed architect Frank Lloyd Wright and his masterpiece, Fallingwater. The overarching objective of this assignment is to foster our comprehension of architectural and structural materials, illuminating their inherent properties and elucidating their strategic integration within the building's design. Furthermore, the assignment prompts the inclusion of detailed system installation diagrams, including the intricate post-tensioning cable system.

The materials selected for the architectural components of Fallingwater encompass a carefully curated ensemble. These include tempered single-paned glass, bear run sandstone, hemlock timber, lime-based plaster, and slate. In parallel, the structural elements boast coated steel and reinforced concrete. Each of these materials has been thoughtfully chosen by the architect to facilitate harmonious integration with the surrounding environment, thereby realizing the central tenets of organic architecture. Consequently, this harmonious amalgamation of materials is informed by profound conceptual underpinnings, delineating the rationale behind their diverse applications within the structure.
