Group Formation and Collaboration
In this assignment, students were required to form groups of five members. The size of the group was crucial, as anything more or less required approval from the module coordinator. This collaboration fostered teamwork and effective communication among members, ensuring that tasks were delegated properly and the final deliverables met the project’s objectives.
Study on IBS-Constructed Buildings
Our group conducted an in-depth study of a building, specifically an apartment constructed using the IBS (Industrialized Building System) method. We identified and analyzed the IBS components used in the construction, including their sizes and specific applications. This study provided valuable insights into the practical implementation of IBS in modern construction, highlighting its efficiency and sustainability.
Apartment Unit Design Incorporating IBS
We were tasked with designing an apartment unit with a maximum size of 100 square meters. The design included a living hall, dining area, three bedrooms, and two toilets. Our design primarily utilized IBS structures and components such as precast walls, blockwork, hollow core slabs, precast staircases, toilet pods, and prefabricated timber roof trusses. The arrangement of the units across three levels, as per the provided guidelines, ensured an optimal use of space and resources.
Report Content and Reflections
The report included the concept and framework of the proposed IBS categories, along with detailed drawings—plans, elevations, sections, isometric views, and sectional perspectives. We also documented the sequence of construction and provided a schedule of modular components. Reflecting on this project, I gained a comprehensive understanding of IBS construction processes, from design to execution. This exercise not only enhanced my technical skills but also highlighted the importance of collaboration in achieving a successful project outcome.
Learning Outcomes and Skills Developed
Through this project, I developed a strong understanding of various IBS construction methods and how to apply them effectively in building design. The process of writing the report enhanced my ability to document and analyze construction methods and materials, and the peer assessment provided valuable feedback on group dynamics and individual contributions.
