Assignment 1

The core objective of this group assignment is to facilitate our exploration and understanding of a chosen building from various dimensions, with a particular focus on its design concept and material application. By delving into these aspects, we lay the foundation for our continued development in subsequent assignments.

Through this assignment, we are tasked with unraveling the intricacies of the selected building's design philosophy. This encompasses comprehending the underlying principles, inspirations, and artistic vision that have driven its creation. In parallel, we delve into the strategic use of materials, gaining insights into how they have been meticulously chosen and seamlessly integrated to realize the building's aesthetic and functional goals.

By undertaking this comprehensive analysis, we arm ourselves with a profound understanding of the intricate relationship between design intent, materiality, and spatial configuration. This, in turn, serves as a springboard for our growth and maturation as we progress towards forthcoming assignments, where we will harness this acquired knowledge to contribute meaningfully to the evolution of our project.

In this group assignment, our task was to conduct comprehensive research on a building selected randomly by our lecturer. Our designated building was the Holiday Home of Diyathalawa in Sri Lanka. Once the assignment's scope was clear, I assumed the role of group leader and initiated communication with the architects of the chosen building via email. This correspondence aimed to gather valuable insights into their design concepts and obtain orthographic drawings.

The assignment's focal point revolved around understanding and delving into design principles. In our case, we opted to investigate five key principles: parti, context, space planning, circulation, and structure. This involved a process of sketching, drawing, and eventually creating mock-ups and finalized models to effectively visualize and represent these principles in our study.

Regrettably, the assignment encountered a setback as certain members of the group demonstrated a lack of responsibility and commitment. Despite collective efforts to motivate and encourage their engagement, there was limited progress. As a result, the remaining group members were compelled to assume additional responsibilities to bridge the gaps and ensure the completion of the assignment within the stipulated timeline.

Despite these challenges, the group persevered and demonstrated a collective commitment to the assignment's successful culmination, resulting in a comprehensive and well-prepared submission.
